The Reimagining Recess Program not only gave my staff practical strategies and games to facilitate, but it also helped to grow our mindset as adults who have the power to enhance the playground environment for all kids.”

Reimagining Recess

Information:

Reimagining Recess, created by the Association of Washington Student Leaders, is a dynamic training that helps schools transform recess into a powerful space for connection, problem-solving, and leadership. Recess is where students practice real life, and this program helps schools make that practice intentional, inclusive, and engaging.

Designed for paraeducators, recess teams, counselors, teachers, student leaders, and support staff, Reimagining Recess strengthens MTSS systems by enhancing Tier 1 supports for all students while providing Tier 2 strategies that support belonging, social skills, and conflict reduction for students who need additional structure.

Participants gain practical tools for:

  • Connection and community-building games

  • Name games and inclusive participation strategies

  • Theme and variation activities

  • Mindfulness and self-management practices

  • Conflict resolution strategies

  • Indoor and outdoor recess systems

  • Student leadership structures that support recess success

  • Access to video tools and a resource library

  • Practical implementation within your school’s unique schedule and context

How it works:
Participants learn by doing. AWSL models activities, strategies, and systems in real time so staff leave with ready-to-use games, scripts, and actionable plans that can immediately improve recess culture.

More than a training, Reimagining Recess is a proactive investment in safer play, stronger belonging, and more supportive school communities.

Who it’s for:
Paraeducators, recess teams, counselors, teachers, and student leaders who want safer play, stronger belonging, and fewer conflicts.

In their words:

“In my whole career, I do not remember attending such an awesome training. The information was helpful and useful. The activities were interesting and engaging. I would highly recommend this to anyone involved in recess or wanting to learn about games.” - Omak SD Paraeducator
