GEAR UP/AVID Programs from AWSL

Know Yourself - Know Your Options - Know How to Work with Others

The Association of Washington Student Leaders (AWSL) has served schools with GEAR UP and AVID grants for the last 10 years. Program goals are met through adapting the nationally recognized AWSL curriculum and incorporating AWSP’s Cispus and Chewelah Peak learning centers and their challenge course facilities. Additionally, GEAR UP / AVID students are being served by bringing the program directly to the schools or a nearby site.

Each program developed by AWSL for GEAR UP / AVID schools is customized to meet the specific needs and goals of the students. The GEAR UP / AVID curriculum is driven by the cornerstone concepts of know yourself, know your options and know how to work with others.

Programs

GEAR UP / AVID Retreat at Cispus or Chewelah Peak (1 to 3 days)
In a retreat setting away from the hustle and bustle of school life, GEAR UP students learn concepts and skills as well as strengthen their peer to peer and student to staff relationships.

GEAR UP / AVID One-day Workshop at a School or Nearby Site
Utilizing a school’s gym or nearby site, GEAR UP students are led through a series of large group activities. Each activity is further explored through small group discussion. Topics include: school climate, goal setting, careers and overcoming obstacles and taking positive risks. This workshop is particularly beneficial when combined with a college visitation.

GEAR UP / AVID Summer Leadership Camp at Chewelah Peak (2 to 4 days)
Through an interactive camp experience, GEAR UP students learn and practice essential skills that will prepare them for success in high school and beyond. Summer camp experiences can be customized to serve students from one school or from a number of schools.
